Last Monday, Rockdale native Nick Morehead fulfilled a lifelong ambition when Milano ISD trustees and administrators named him as the school’s new football coach. “I’m thrilled,” he said. “I’m ready to get going and get things
“I’m thrilled,” he said. “I’m ready to get going and get things rolling.”
“I’ve always wanted to be a head coach and I’m thankful that I have the opportunity here.”
A 2008 graduate of Rockdale High School who was a three-year letterman for the Tigers, Morehead graduated from Sam Houston State University in the Fall of 2013. He started off his coaching career in Franklin during his final college semester and finished out the 2013-14 school year at FHS before coming to Milano the following year, where he has found himself at home over the years.
“I’m from Rockdale and getting out of (college) I came back here getting close to home,” he said. “I just fell in love with Milano. They took me in like family and I’m happy to have the opportunity here to do that.”
Morehead takes over a team that went 2-7 this past fall and has missed out on the post-season for the last two years. This after having a run where the Eagles went to the playoffs eight of nine seasons from 2010 to 2018.
“We ended last year and we were pretty short-handed,” he said. “The main thing is that I’m trying to increase participation and get kids to come out and play.”
“We’re going to change our offense a little bit to get more hands on the ball to get the kids excited and more involved. When I got here, we were coming off a long playoff run and my first five years here we went to the playoffs. We’ve been out the last two and we’re ready to get back in”
In addition to his players, Morehead also wants to get people in Milano more involved as well.
“I want to get the community involved in the football program and for kids to get involved at an early age to try to build some excitement into football and grow the program into the future,” he said.
Milano ISD Supt. Elisabeth Luevanos said that when finding former head coach Chad Lagrone’s replacement, the administrative team and the board of trustees were looking for someone who was “unflappable under pressure, diligent in their work with students and acted as an exemplar to our student athletes,” qualities they found in Morehead.
“The choice to look internally for Coach Lagrone’s replacement was highlighted by the fact that we had an individual within our organization that had been working tirelessly day in and day out for many years to serve our students,” Luevanos said. Since arriving at MHS in the fall of 2014,
Since arriving at MHS in the fall of 2014, Morehead has been the offensive line coach. He has also been the defensive coordinator for the last four seasons. He has also been the Eagles’ head baseball coach for the last three seasons.
“Overall, Coach Morehead has proven to be an asset to our school district as a teacher in the classroom and as a coach within our athletic department,” she said. “He is known throughout our community for his character, perseverance and dedication to serving our students.”
Luevanos also said that the administration is excited that Morehead accepted the position and that they are looking forward to the 2021 football season.
