Tiger basketball started off hot Friday night in Rogers, but early foul trouble and a lack of depth led to Rockdale coming up short against the Eagles, 71-53.

The Blue-and-Gold held their own in the first half, leading 19-17 at the end of the first and trailing 37-36 in large part to multiple threes from leading scorer Chris Perez.

Things were different in the second half as a Tiger team that only had seven players seemed to run out of gas. Rogers outscored the Tigers 21-8 in the third to take a 58-44 lead and outscored them again in the fourth 13-9 to give Rockdale their second district loss.

Perez finished the evening with 23 points while Mason Willard and Wyatt Windham each had 9. Aiden Hirt had 8 and Chris Miles had 4 on two open floaters in the lane. The Tigers were without junior Ivan Bonner, who was in concussion protocol.

THIS WEEK—RHS stayed home on Tuesday to host Lexington. Results from the contest will be in next week’s Reporter.

The Tigers hit the road again Friday evening to take on Caldwell. CHS is 1-1 in district play so far with a 51-40 win over Florence and a 73-43 loss to Academy, the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches’ tenth-ranked team in Class 3A. Game time in Caldwell is anticipated to start around 7:30 p.m., following the completion of the girls’ game.

LADY TIGERS—The girls got off to a slow start, trailing 18-2 midway through the second quarter.

Although the Lady Eagles ended up winning 40-28, the Blue-and-Gold kept Rogers on their toes.

With 43 seconds left in the third, Kyli Alonzo of Rogers was targeting the taped-up shoulder of Karli Marburger as she was taking the ball down the court which led to an exchange of words between the two. Both player were given technicals.

Rogers did end up winning, but multiple witnesses noted that they gave Rockdale players a lot of space to shoot for the remainder of the game.

Julie Bartsch led Rockdale with 10, Brianna Webb 9 and Ciara Miles had 4. Mijah Crawford scored 2 and T’Niyah Miles and Marburger each had 1.

THIS WEEK—Like the boys, the Lady Tigers got off to a hot start but injuries to Miles and fellow starting guard Saige Robertson have made things difficult as district play has begun. Miles has been released to play and Robertson is expected to be back Friday for their game in Caldwell.

Tip-off is set for 6:15 p.m.
