At the conclusion of Friday night’s game at Tiger Stadium between Rockdale and McGregor, it was evident that the home team had moved on from their 67-7 loss to Bellville a week earlier. The Blue-and-Gold came out hot, with 28 unanswered points in the first half before ultimately winning their first District 11-3A-I contest 48-14.
“It’s what you’re looking for,” said RHS head football coach Jacob Campsey. “The bounce back. That’s kind of what my pre-game talk was and they’ve answered the bell all week long.”
The second-year coach also described this past week of practice.
“We put them through some uncomfortable stuff, called some people out, held some people accountable and had nothing but a positive response.” Campsey said. “To come out here and not only win, but win convincingly and stay locked in through the entirety of the game, you don’t have any clue how good that makes me feel.”
“If you’re a good football team, you bounce back and fight through adversity,” he said.
GAME—Both teams were unable to score on their first few drives until Rockdale’s Kobe Mitchell scored on a six-yard TD with a little more than two minutes left in the opening quarter.
It was in the second quarter when the Tigers were on fire with Blaydn Barcak finding classmate Wyatt Windham open for a 15-yard touchdown two minutes into the second.
Less than two minutes later, Tiger nose guard Chad David forced MHS quarterback Chad Lorenz to fumble a ball that was picked up by Rockdale’s Cade Pantaleon. On the next play, Barcak connected with Robert Owens for a 41-yard TD.
The Tigers scored once more in the half on a 15-yard run up the right by Davioun Scott.
Although the Blueand-Gold increased their lead early in the third quarter when sophomore Kemar Spencer scored on a 17-yard run, the Bulldogs were anything but done.
MHS scored two quick touchdowns mid-way through the quarter to make it 34-14.
However, the Tigers regained their 34-point lead when Mitchell scored on his second QB run of the night on a nine-yard run.
The Tigers scored once more when the RHS coaching staff decided to change things up a bit and put sophomore nose guard Chad David at quarterback.
David plowed his way through the Bulldog defense to add another six points to the scoreboard at Tiger Stadium. Daniel Romero’s extra point gave the game it’s final score of 48-14.
Barcak finished the evening going 7 for 15 with 173 yards. Leading receivers for the Blue-and-Gold were Owens, who had three catches for 58 yards and Amarion Butler, who had one catch for 52 yards. Windham was also a top receiver with two catches for 43 yards.
Barcak led the Tigers in rushing with 69 yards on eight carries. Scott also had a nice night on the ground with five carries for 68 yards.
On defense, Cruz San Migel led the way with nine tackles, while Scott and Isaiah Sauls each had seven.
