Rockdale native wins Defensive Most Valuable Player award

ARLINGTON—On Wednesday, former Rockdale High School student Wyatt Windham earned the Defensive Most Valuable Player award after making 18 tackles to help his new school, Albany, take down Mart 41-21 in the Class 2A-II state championship game.

“It’s the best feeling in the world, winning a state championship,” he said. “It was a very hard-earned win and tough season, but we fought through it all.”

Windham and the Lions pushed through a tough non-district schedule, that included eventual Class 2A-I state champion Hawley, before blazing through district play undefeated. They beat their five 6-2A-II opponents by a combined score of 282-24.

Their journey through the post-season didn’t consist of any nail-biters either, as no school came within two touchdowns of the Lions.

He is the son of Bill and Kelly Windham, formerly of Rockdale.

OTHER— Rockdale’s district foe Franklin won their second straight state championship on Thursday evening. The Robertson County school beat Brock on a game-winning field goal, 17-14. Rockdale fell to Franklin, 63-42 on Sept. 30.
