Rockdale High School’s track and field season came to an end Saturday after 10 athletes competed at the Region III meet at Waco’s Midway High School.

Tiger coach Lewis Edmonson said RHS saw some great competition.

“Those kids that they ran against are on a completely different level,” he said. “It’s like ‘what do we do?’ Do we change the way we train our kids?”

“But the competitive edge from our kids was top notch and you can only be proud of that,” he said.

Lady Tiger sophomore Emma Whitsel finished fourth in the 100-meter hurdles with a personal record of 16.04 in Saturday afternoon’s finals.

Whitsel would find out two days later that the girl who beat her, Alana Curl of New Waverly, would qualify for the state meet as the 100-meter hurdle’s wildcard, reserved for the fastest third place finisher out of all four regional meets because Mike A. Myers Stadium, where the state meet is held, is a nine-lane track.

“If she beats that girl from New Waverly, she’s in.” Edmonson said. “That’s crazy.”

Whitsel also placed fifth in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 48.09.

Freshman Jesus Bocanegra placed seventh in the mile with a time of 4:49.79, losing to Franklin’s Nathan Philipello by 0.47 seconds, whom he beat at area the week before.

Bocanegra also placed 11th in the 3200-meter run on Friday morning, with a time of 10:52.75.

Other Rockdale distance runners competing were Ivanna Luna-Hernandez, who also placed 11th in the 3200 with a time of 13:17.92, and Cristo Hernandez, who placed 13th with a time of 11:05.14 in the boys 3200.

RHS senior Albert Silva placed 12th in the 800-meter run and his classmate Isaac Fuentes finished 11th in the 4 0 0 - m e t e r r u n with a time of 53.12 in the prelims.

A mile-relay team made up of Ciara Miles, Hailey Webb, Taylor Delz and Hannah Delz placed 10th with a time of 4:25.84.

Hannah Delz also competed in the 400-meter run, finishing 11th with a 64.85.
