Wendy Brinkley Pickett came to see me the other day and she told me some information I have to share because I am very excited about it. You all already know that she has revamped the inside of Mr. Gatti’s Pizza in WayMar Plaza. What you may not know is that she is going to have a giant salad bar.

In just over one week, the number of confirmed cases in Milam County jumped by six, from 20 confirmed cases to 26 confirmed cases. During that same period, TDSHS reports that the number of confirmed Texas COVID-19 cases increased by over 15 percent in the past week.

100 YEARS AGO.... A Texas Court of Appeals invalidated the state’s cattle-dipping law on a legal action brought by J.M. Leslie of Sipe Springs in Milam County. Leslie’s attorneys argued, successfully, that the law was unconstitutional.

Spotlight shines on 4-H seniors

Kaylee Jackson is a member of the Thorndale 4-H Club. She has participated in the range and plant ID project for 13 years and has shown goats for 13 years. At school, she is involved in NHS, Student Council, UIL Academics-Science and Calculator, and Yearbook.

ORGANIZATIONS

Due to current restrictions and health concerns, the June meeting of the Rockdale Alcoa Retirees has been canceled, according to Doug Williams, spokesperson. The next regularly scheduled meeting will possibly be held in September.

Bootsie’s squash casserole, ribs

Here’s a recipe for squash casserole we had for Mother’s Day by request. The recipe came from Bootsie Peebles so you know it’s good. Mom wanted this exact recipe. I wanted something more cheesy and creamy, but since it was Mother’s Day she won.

Pray for your pastor

I was interviewed by a college senior last week for one of his classes. He’s a ministry major and one of the questions he had to ask was what would you tell someone going into the ministry? A former youth pastor had told him, “Run as far as you can in the opposite direction.” I get that answer.

Teachers, nurses

How ironic that National Teacher Appreciation Week and National Nurses Week should overlap. The week for teachers was May 4-8 and the week to honor nurses was May 6-12.

Praise for Chief Harris’s leadership

Dear editor, It has been my privilege to have known Chief Harris for 20 years and have worked with him as District Attorney for the last 7-1/2 years. In my 40 years as a state and federal prosecutor, I have worked with many fine law enforcement officers. None finer than Thomas Harris.

First trip out of Rockdale in a while

I’m getting three weeks per fill up lately and I can’t remember the last time I went outside of Rockdale. However, on Saturday Noelia and I went to Costco to get a few things we needed. It’s been a long time since either of us has gone there. Masks are required at Costco so we brought ours.
