Change and growth are up to us

JUDGE’S COMMENTS For the past eleven months we have been promoting economic development in Milam County. In those months we have made a lot of progress and good things are happening. For example, we have had four successful economic summits in the county to bring this issue to the forefront.

Looking back...

100 YEARS AGO..... Former Cameron City Marshall Tom Parker was convicted of manslaughter in a Waco federal district court for killing his brother-in-law, Joe White. It was the fourth trial for Parker. Two had ended in mistrials and a third ended when a juror became ill.

Thanksgiving goals

He told me to tell you that Ilove Thanksgiving. I’m not sure why, I’m not a foodie and we don’t do big family affairs. Maybe it’s the calm before the storm. The calm before Christmas is what I’m talking about.

ARockdale minister once told a story about a church business meeting attended by a very elderly man who was one of the “pillars”—quotation marks on purpose—of the congregation. After about an hour, the gentleman began banging his cane loudly on the floor until he was recognized by the chairman.

Looking back... 100 YEARS AGO.... Otis Dodson, described as a young man from Alabama, died when apparently trying to dismount in Thorndale from a freight train on which he had been hitching a ride from Thrall. The freight car passed over him.

Ultimate honor

Monday was Veterans Day. Four days previously, a Rockdale veteran, and legendary businessman, received an award that is mind-boggling. Milton R. “Jim” Currey, a World War II veteran, received his 75-year-pin from the American Legion that day at his home.
