Yates benefit set for Nov. 4

A fundraising benefit for Diane Yates will be held at 11 a.m. Nov. 4 at the Cameron VFD Post No. 2010, 1106 W. 22nd St., in Cameron. Yates is an 80-year-old woman who lost $60,000 when she gave the money to contractor Brandon Myers for home renovations last winter which were never completed.

ESD town halls

Town hall meetings will be held to discuss creating an Emergency Services District (ESD) in Milam County. This imitative was put on the May 7 ballot earlier this year but was not done correctly and canceled. It will hopefully appear on the November ballot this year.

East Seventh Avenue will now be known as Gertrude Calvin Hardway Street after a renaming ceremony took place on Saturday. Mrs. Hardway, who is 103 years young, has lived most of her life on East Seventh Street after being born in Liberty Hill on Feb. 6, 1920.

A crowd of people turned out for Brooke Graham’s concert at East Bell Taphouse’s Rocktoberfest on Saturday evening. It was her last home singing gig before the launch of her big Nashville band in Gulf Shores, Alabama, for the 31st annual Jimmy Buffet Festival.

Is Rockdale’s small-town charm in danger?

A recurring sentiment I have heard is that folks want Rockdale to keep its small-town charm. This was also expressed in results from the recent community survey. What is that exactly? Is it endangered? How can it be preserved? When I hear “small-town charm,” a few things come to mind.
