My oldest step-daughter showed up at Christmas-time with an idea. This is usually enough to make me run screaming for the hills. Or just run screaming. She’s one of the sweetest persons on the planet. It’s just that through most of her life we have never been sure which planet.

The recent cold snap saw the mercury fall to an official temperature of 12 degrees before the sun “warmed” things up Wednesday, Jan. 10. Twelve is really cold for Rockdale. It’s so cold there’s not a whole lot of weather history here with which it can be compared.

Before Spanish explorer Alvaro de Piñeda mapped the coast of Texas in 1519, it was the home of many Indian tribes. In the east were the Caddo, the Karankawas were coastal tribes, the plains hosted the Comanches, Apaches and Wichitas and the Tonkawas were in Central Texas.

There are a few of us old hides still around that experienced all three of Rockdale’s trips to the UIL state finals in football. First one was in 1962, at what is now the UT-Arlington stadium. I was on the sideline with a camera for that one, in my third year as this paper’s “news editor.

Funny how the simple act of the year turning over into a new one can make us a little queasy. I suppose the reasons are obvious. Seeing the numbers change reminds us of our own mortality.

If a year could be said to have been bipolar, 2017 was that year for Rockdale and its residents. Talk about going to the highest highs and the lowest lows. And all in a period of 11 weeks.

At this fall’s town hall meeting to discuss annexation, a comment reverberated in my head and stayed with me. “There’s a reason some of us choose to live in the country.” Yes.
