The Life of Shirley Anne Bailey “Come healing of the body, Come healing of the Mind.” Leonard Cohen.

Shirley Anne Caywood Bailey was born to Herbert N “Spud” Cayw o o d a n d Eutha Marie Cay wood at her parents’ home in Rockdale on Sept. 4, 1941.

She attended school in Rockdale.

She met the love of her life, Adrian Wayne Bailey Sr. in 1957 and married him on Dec. 21, 1958, in the unfinished sanctuary of the Rockdale Christian Church.

They lived in Rapid City, South Dakota, during the early part of Adrian’s term of enlistment in the United States Army.

When she became pregnant she wanted her children to be born Texans so she wrote to President Lyndon Johnson and asked for help in getting Adrian transferred to Texas. President Johnson came through for her and they were transferred to Mineral Wells.

On Dec. 21, 2021, they would have celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary.

Shirley loved being a mother to her three sons.

She served as a den mother, Sunday school teacher, and room mother.

She encouraged her children to explore their interests, whatever they be. She and Adrian proudly attended all of their children’s events and activities. When her grandchildren

When her grandchildren came along, she got to do much of it all over again. She also took great pleasure in seeing her great-grandchildren’s athletic and theatrical performances.

Shirley loved to bowl and bowled on league teams for many years.

After her children were all in school, Shirley went to work at the Rockdale Independent School District and for over 25 years she shared her love and gave support to children of all ages. In later life, she often talk

In later life, she often talked about her students as her children and wanted to make sure they were all okay. She also volunteered many hours on the board of the MARC Center.

Shirley never knew an enemy. Everyone she met was a friend she hadn’t talked to yet. She would talk to anyone, anytime. It didn’t matter if they spoke English or not, she would find a way to communicate with them, sometimes to the astonished embarrassment of her two granddaughters.

Shirley was the luckiest person you’d ever meet in a casino. No matter where or when (or how much), she would celebrate the winnings, even when they were losses. Shirley also loved auctions and garage sales.

She was a co-owner of Bailey Auctions and loved seeing people she knew and meeting new people at Memaw’s Closet and the Bailey Auction house on Main Street.

Shirley died on Dec. 14, 2021, at 2:10 p.m. in Rockdale after a brief final illness. She was preceded in death

She was preceded in death by her parents, Herbert N. “Spud” and Eutha Marie Caywood and her brother, Jerry A. Caywood.

Survivors are husband Adrian Wayne Bailey Sr.; sons Adrian Wayne Bailey Jr. and partner Stephen Mark Caffey, Kevin Russell Bailey and wife Lynn Bailey, Michael Scott Bailey and wife Andrea Bailey; grandchildren Seth Griffin, Kayley Nichole Bailey, Brittany Marie Tucker and husband Cameron Tucker, Whitney Anne Bailey and partner Devon Brabham, Michael Scott Bailey Jr.; also, two great-grandsons and two great-granddaughters.

Pallbearers were Michael Scott Bailey Jr., Cameron Tucker, Kyle Cooke, Michael Weed, Stephen Mark Caffey, Kingston Weed, Tiffany Weed.

Honorary pallbearers were Walter Pond, Owners and staff of Banda’s, Devon Brabham, Mary Ann Lopez, Asher Weed, and the many students she taught over the years.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 19, at the Phillips & Luckey Funeral home in Rockdale with burial in the Oak Lawn Cemetery in Rockdale.

Visitation was Saturday, Dec. 18, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
