Milano had a hard time stopping Thrall’s quarterback Colter Hill, who threw for 257 yards and five of the Tigers’ seven touchdowns on Friday night.
THS got an early advantage with a 20-0 lead at the close of the first quarter when Hill threw TD passes to Clayton Allen, Cayden West and Braeden West.
In the second, Dallas Meiske added to Thrall’s lead with a 22-yard pass from Hill in the closing seconds of the first half. This put the Williamson County crew up 26-0 at halftime.
Thrall had a quiet third quarter but scored twice more early in the fourth quarter, First, on a goal line pass from Hill to Jake Vizena. Less than 30 seconds later, they scored on a Nolan Sheffield pass to Mikey Rodriguez from the 10-yard line. THS led by the eventual final score 38-0
The Eagles were led by sophomore quarterback Ethen Knight, who was 12-of-23 with 124 passing yards.
Drew Demeritt was the top receiver with three catches for 55 yards. Noah Benavides had two catches for 27 yards, Danny Cloud had four catches for 23 yards and Marquise Jones had two catches for 21 yards.
MHS also had three players with more than 10 tackles. Danny Cloud led Milano with 12 tackles and Jeremy Reyes and Tucker Taylor each had 11.
Safety Hector Munoz was also a top defender for Milano with three deflected passes and three blocked points-after-touchdowns (PATs).
“Even with the results, I’m glad our players have each others backs,” said Chad Lagrone, MHS football coach. “This is a group of guys that sticks together.
“A lot of guys after a bad play would jump on each others backs and start pointing fingers. We don’t have that and I’m really proud of them.”
The Eagles are now 0-5 on the season but have had a tough track on the way. The young team faced three ranked opponents in their first four games before this week. Now going into their bye week, MHS prepares for a challenging District 13-2A Division schedule full of schools much larger than Milano High School.
According to Texas Football Magazine, Thorndale, Thrall, Holland, Marlin, Rosebud-Lott and Hearne all had at least 212 students in fall of 2017, when the UIL track every school in Texas’s enrollment to help classify schools. At the same time, MHS had only 174.
DOWN THE ROAD-After their bye week, the Eagles travel across the Robertson County line on Friday, Oct. 11, to face Hearne, a team that has 15 starters returning from 2018 playoff squad. MHS back home to face Thorndale on Friday, Oct. 18. THS is 4-1 on the season and has defeated three of their opponents by 50.
