Although it was just one game, Monday night’s district softball matchup between Thorndale and Milano seemed more like a series. The game that took more than four hours to complete, thanks to a weather delay that kept being prolonged due to non-stop lightning and a little bit of rainfall.
Thorndale got hot early, leading 5-0 after the first two innings with hits from Landri Martinka, Natalie Garcia and Emilee e Baker.
Milano fought back in the third, scoring four runs off a two-out rally to make the score 5-4.
MHS, a team made up almost entirely of freshman, took the lead in the top of the fourth after Kylee Harris hit a two-run shot off Karis Ginn. Harris’s cousin, Aalyiah McBrewer, hit a solo home run on the next at-bat, putting the Lady Eagles up 7-5.
Baker helped close the gap in the bottom of the fourth, hitting a solo shot of her own off Milano’s Toni Meyer to make it 7-6.
However, right before the fifth inning began, lightning was noticed not too far off in the distance, meaning that both teams had to clear the field and wait at least 30 minutes before resuming play.
With continuous strikes and eventual precipitation, the pause lasted close to two hours before both schools began playing again.
When action resumed, everything seemed to go the way of the Lady Dogs.
Ginn didn’t give up a hit in the final three innings and balls put in play by Martinka, Kelsey Kovar, Raeghan Carlson and Reagyn Trahan led to three more runs for Thorndale, which was enough to give them a 9-7 victory.
Ginn led Thorndale with 12 strikeouts and Garcia, Martinka and Kovar led at the plate with two hits.
LADY EAGLES—A little more than 12 hours after the conclusion of their game in Thorndale, the Lady Eagles fell to Thrall, 15-2 at home.
MHS has the remainder of spring break off and returns to action at home against Bartlett on Tuesday. Game time is at 6 p.m. under the lights at Becky Dent Field.
LADY DOGS—Like Milano, THS also had a game the next day. The Lady Dogs shutout Bremond on the road 6-0, marking the first time the two teams have played each other since their area round matchup in May when the Lady Tigers ousted them from the postseason.
THS plays next on Tuesday, when they host Holland. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
