As part of the Texas Department of Transportation’s Drive Sober. No Regrets. campaign for spring break, Milam County Sheriff’s Office and law enforcement officers across Texas will increase DWI patrols to identify and stop impaired drivers.

Dear editor, Rockdale Christian Services extends a heartfelt thank you to our community for their generosity in support of the “Brown House” food pantry. Even with our reduced operations, we were able to provide food to an average of 150 families (290 individuals) per month this past year.

Scholarships, fried fish plates and more

What an operation they have going on at the KC Hall for their Lenten fish fries. It was run like a well-oiled machine and it was fun watching all of them do their jobs. The only thing I didn’t get a photo of were the finished plates.

100 YEARS AGO… Burglars were active in Rockdale. The house occupied by C.W. Matson and J.A. Thomas (the old Hiller home on East Cameron Avenue) was entered and $15 or $20 worth of jewelry taken. The thieves made their getaway just before Mr. and Mrs.

Cornyn makes a visit to Milam County

U.S. Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) visited Milam County for the first time on Feb. 21. Local leaders updated Sen. Cornyn on the impact of federal COVID-19 relief funding and what it has accomplished in their communities.

War hits home

Four and a half years ago, I first stepped foot in Rockdale. Little did I know that my time here would take me places I never would have dreamed. Only two years in, our church sent a team to Ukraine. The Russian-Ukrainian war has hit home for us here at Meadowbrook.

Tribute to Harold from me and Christine

I don’t remember a time when there wasn’t the Parsley family in my life. We lost a good man in Harold last week. He was the boss of many of my friends who worked at Parsley’s Pullet Parlor.

Veterans Services’ Ken Janicek retiring

One of the many great things Milam County provides is a Veterans Service Department. Veterans Services provides just about all things veteran to the almost 1,500 veterans in Milam County. Mr. Ken Janicek has been in charge of this department for almost 24 years and has done such a marvelous job!

100 YEARS AGO… The biggest deal yet recorded in the Rockdale oil field was finally closed when Dr. T.D. Roundtree leased to the Tidal Oil Company of Tulsa, OK, 260 acres off of his 535- acre farm, the consideration being $240 per acre, or a total of $62,400. W.E.
