100 YEARS AGO... Armistice Day marked the beginning of the Fourth Red Cross Roll Call of 1920. Possibly there could not have been a more appropriate day set as this day marks the ending of the struggle in which the American Red Cross played such a great part.

I’ve been reading in 2nd Timothy and the Apostle Paul tells Timothy, a younger-middle aged pastor, to throw another log on the fire. Actually he tells him to, “fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands” (2nd Timothy 1:6).

According to the Food Network, thawing a frozen turkey takes several days. The popular food-based television channel says it can take roughly four to five days for a frozen 20-pound turkey to fully defrost. Thanksgiving hosts who plan to cook turkeys that weight more than 20 lbs.

When I was young we always had macaroni and cheese at Thanksgiving and it was usually homemade instead of the boxed kind. On Mom’s side of the family anyway. These days we have it some years, but there are plenty of carbs on Thanksgiving even without it.

Milano VFD fundraiser set for Feb. 20

Mi l a n o Volu nte e r Fire Department is working on their annual fundraiser. The group is selling tickets for a variety of guns (in the form of Academy gift cards) for $5 each or five for $20. The drawing will be held at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 20. Need not be present to win.

Give thanks

The 20th Annual Community Outreach Thanksgiving Dinner will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, at First Baptist Church. These wonderful volunteers have served the community every year since the event was started at New Hope Baptist Church by Pastor Winfred Tyler.

Community invited to tree lighting

Dear editor, I would like the invite the residents of Rockdale to our Community Christmas Tree Lighting on Thursday, Nov. 19 at Wolf Park. With the help of many Rockdale businesses and individuals we were able to purchase a 32-foot tall lighted Christmas tree for the whole town to enjoy.

I’m sure you’ve already noticed this, but Rockdale is in that scary, several-week period where everyone is being blinded when they drive east in the morning and west in the afternoon. I almost ran over my neighbor, Sonny Lillard, the other day.

Record spike in COVID cases in Milam County

On Monday, Nov. 9, we had a new record high number of COVID-19 cases in Milam County. We had a single, one-day total of 28 new cases. That brought the number of active COVID-19 cases up to 56. This is the highest count of active cases since the statewide spike on July 16.
