Writer gets named to PVAM Morrison series

Prairie View A&M University announced last week that Nikki Giovanni has been named the 2021-2022 Writer-in-Residence in the Toni Morrison Writing Program. The appointment begins with a virtual series taking place Sept. 27-29.

Restaurant patron leaves $10K tip

The employees of an eatery in Gainesville, Fla., that was slammed by the coronavirus epidemic got a lift when a patron paid his $144.66 tab, adding a $10,000 tip, according to the Association of Mature American Citizens. The philanthropist asked to speak with the staff.

Friends recall life of Rockdale businessman

Doug Wayne Wilde, a longtime respected Rockdale businessman, died recently. He had made many friends owning his business, CarQuest of Rockdale (and previously Western Auto), and through church and club activities.

Rockdale’s monthly sales tax report continues to improve

Rockdale’s tax returns from the state’s comptroller’s office released in August for the month of June continue to increase over the month before and outpace totals from last year at this time. Rockdale got $94,262 back from sales tax receipts which was almost 5 percent better than the May total.
