Sheriffs support border security funding in House hearing

During the House Appropriations Committee hearing last Wednesday in Austin, several border sheriffs testified in support of additional funding that is GOP members feel is needed to secure the state’s southern border.

Grades 3 and 4 to quarantine

This morning our 3rd grade reached the red threshold of active COVID cases. Beginning tomorrow, Wednesday, Sept. 1, all 3rd graders will be quarantined at home with remote conferencing. Our 3rd grade students may return to school on Monday, Sept. 13.

County reports 41 new cases of COVID-19

Milam County reports there are 41 new cases with 21 PCR cases and 20 probable cases.   "We discharged nine cases for a net increase of 32 new confirmed cases in Milam County, bringing the total to a record high of 226 confirmed active cases in the county.

RISD quarantines fourth grade at intermediate school

RISD officials decided to quarantine the 4th-grade at Rockdale Intermediate School for the next 10 days. "While I understand that sounds alarming, I wanted to let you know why we made this decision. The district has created a COVID alert levels chart with green, yellow, orange and red levels.

Milam County reports COVID-19 related death No. 59

Milam County Judge Steve Young had the unfortunate task of reporting a second COVID-19 related death in as many days Thursday night. "I regret to advise of our 59th death in Milam County. This is the second day in a row that we report a COVID-19 related death of a Milam County resident.

Milam records COVID-19 related death No. 58

"Today, we report our 58th COVID-19 related death in Milam County," county judge Steve Young wrote in a Wednesday night email. " This person was not vaccinated and infected with the Delta variant.

Public hearing set for budget, abatements

Milam County commissioners set Sept. 13 as the date for public hearing on the upcoming fiscal year county budget and to hear reasons for and against granting tax abatement to two solar projects in the county. The hearing will begin at 9:30 a.m. in the county courthouse in Cameron.

MDD approves grant for taphouse

East Bell Taphouse, which will be in the building at the corner of Bell and Main streets, got a $10,000 facade grant, from the Municipal Development District at Monday night’s meeting in Rockdale.

Ambulance concerns liven Milam meeting

Milam County’s ambulance service, or as one speaker at Monday’s commissioners court meeting called it “lack of service,” took center stage during a discussion of the existing contract with AMR. “I am here to talk about ambulance availability or lack there of,” said Bill Whitmire.
