After a long layoff, the Rockdale Park Board met in City Council chambers July 15 and authorized member Michelle Larkin to seek grants to apply for which would help pay for some of the things the board would like to see done at the city’s parks.

Thorndale hires 2 new officers, appoints auditor

The city of Thorndale has added law enforcement officers to its force. At the City Council meeting last July 14, the members voted to hire two new o f fi c e r s . The council also appointed accountant Donald Allman of Georgetown to perform the annual audit for fiscal year 2021-22.

Family reunion planned for friends, too, July 24

The Sanford and Lucy Caffey family reunion for friends and relatives will be held at Patterson Center adjacent to Fair Park on July 24 beginning at 10: a.m. A pot luck lunch will be served at noon with drinks, plates and utensils furnished.

Farmers’ Market is now every Saturday morning

The Rockdale Chamber of Commerce is holding a farmers’ market on the grounds of the historic Coffield Stone Tree House at 1203 W Cameron. The market is held each Saturday from now until the end of October. The hours are 8 a.m. to noon.

Yard of the Month looking for contenders

Rockdale Earth Day is looking for yards in the community, to consider for “Yard of the Month.” The program will run through September. Yards must be within the city limits of Rockdale, and nominations are due by the 23rd of the preceding month. Send your nominations to: rockdaleearthday@yahoo.com.

Texas families have through July 31 to enroll newborns in the Texas Tuition Promise Fund and pay this academic year's rates for all or some future tuition and schoolwide required fees at Texas public colleges and universities, excluding medical and dental institutions.

VFW Auxiliary seeking school supplies for kids

As one school year ends, the beginning of a new one is just a summer away. So preparation for the coming school year is underway in some corners of the area. The VFW Auxiliary Post 6525 in Rockdale is now accepting donations for its 2021 School Supplies Drive.

Teen leaders and adult leaders taught 4-H lessons at 4-H Food Day Camp on July 15. The 4-H’ers took a tour through the Central Avenue Bistro in Cameron led by owner Spring Janke. They learned how a restaurant runs, food safety and the operation of a restaurant kitchen.
