Girl Scouts hosting membership swim party

Milam County Girl Scouts are going to have a free swim party at the Rockdale City Pool on Aug. 13 from 6 to 8 p.m., for all girls who want to join Milam County Girl Scouts.  Girls from Rockdale, Cameron, Milano, Gause, Thorndale and Buckholts can come to swim for free that evening.

COVID-19 numbers moving in an upward trend again

The number of reported cases of COVID-19 are on the rise again. On Monday morning there were 20 new cases and Tuesday there were 19 reported lifting the total to 39 new cases, according to an email from Milam County Judge Steve Young.

"Our numbers are really going up. Today we have 20 new PCR cases and 6 discharged PCR cases. We also have 4 new probable cases and no discharged probable cases. This brings the total current active cases in Milam County to 79.

Rockdale sets public hearing for city budget

The Rockdale City Council voted to hold a public hearing on the city’s budget for fiscal 2021-22 at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 7 in City Hall. The council on first reading also voted to rezone the industrial park in the city to industrial with planned unit overlay.

County has grant to create needed flood plain map

Last week Milam County was awarded another grant in the amount of $848,000 from the Texas Water Development Board, Milam County Judge Steve Young announced Monday in the county courthouse. The grant will be used to map the entire county for flooding.

VFW Auxiliary ready to hand out school supplies

Those parents and guardians of school-age children who would like to take advantage of the Veterans of Foreign Wars’ kindness have a chance to do so Saturday. The members have been collecting items to help students get ready for the coming school year for months.

County creates small business recovery plan

County businesses can soon start applying for funds “lost” during the COVID-19 shutdown and slowdown of the past year. The Milam County commissioners voted in Monday’s meeting in the county courthouse to create the Milam County Small Business Grant Program.

Area farm provides habitat for native species

Earlier this month 60 16-week old bobwhites from Autumn Blaze Quail Farm near Buffalo were released at Bird and Bee Farm where they will find native Texas grasses and flowers to scratch around in.

MDD votes to pay off loan early

The MDD board of directors voted to authorize $91,000 from its funds to pay off 2013 bond debt early. They then voted to apply some of the saved money from paying off that bond debt to payments for the 2016 bond debt.

City addresses reason for Rockdale current water-rate formula

At a July 12 hearing on water quality in the Rockdale City Council chamber, questions turned away from the hearing topic to the high price of water service in the city. City officials addressed the questions matter-of-factly. The pipes in the city are old, very old.
