42 indictments handed down by grand jurors

CAMERON—A Milam County Grand Jury handed down 42 indictments against 32 individuals Thursday, as follows, according to Prosecutor Bill Torrey: • Anthony Navarro, 27, Rockdale, possession of controlled substance (less than one gram).

School-parent teamwork big part of process

RISD REPORT Rockdale ISD students, teachers and parents are back in the school mode as of last week. Students have enjoyed days full of leisure and fun, but most felt the need to get back to the routine of school.

Church helps area schools, teachers Murray Street Church of Christ served 66 area students in its annual school supply giveaway last Monday. The church also hosted 100 teachers and staff from the Rockdale Independent School District at its annual breakfast last Tuesday.

Milam burn ban is back for residents

QUICK LOOK With temperature reaching triple digits every afternoon, and this spring’s rains leaving abundant vegetation well into the summer, Milam County commissioners imposed an outdoor burning ban. The ban, which will be enforced until further notice, covers unincorporated areas of the county.

Hospital tax hearing Thursday

Rockdale residents will get a chance to express opinions, and be briefed, on the status of a new proposed 16.9-cent property tax at 5:30 p.m. Thursday when the Rockdale Hospital District board holds a public hearing in the fellowship hall of Meadowbrook Baptist Church.

‘SPEAK, BUT NO DIALOGUE’

Those attending Thursday’s public hearing may speak and express their opinions but should not expect to enter into a dialogue with the board, according to hospital district directors. RHD guidelines state the board “is not permitted to answer questions.” Speakers will be allowed three minutes each.

Uptick seen in RISD enrollment

First day of classes in the 2019-20 school year will be Thursday in the Rockdale ISD and administrators are looking for an enrollment increase of about a dozen over August, 2018. Thorndale ISD are the early birds, with classes beginning Wednesday (Aug. 15) while Milano’s first day is Wednesday, Aug.

Reporter continues under family leadership

Another Cooke has joined the staff at The Rockdale Reporter. Kyle Cooke was welcomed to the general manager position last week and will oversee the day-to-day operations of the newspaper.

She sees the ‘other’ side of Rockdale

Barbara Holly sees a different side of Rockdale. Holly, director of the Development Services Department for the City of Rockdale, sees the weeds, trash, debris and a few other things most people would choose not to remember. It’s her job.
