State legislation which enabled the Rockdale ISD to lower its tax rate, counter the effects of the loss of Luminant from the tax rolls and grant substantial salary increases is also having a positive effect on area school districts: Thorndale rate going from $1.17 to $1.

Sex assault draws prison term

CAMERON—A 19-year-old Cameron man has drawn a 180-day prison term on a sex assault charge. According to the arrest affidavit, Jacob Green was accused of two assaults of a resident living in a group home for adults with special needs, one occurring in Cameron and one in a rural area of FM 486.

Three accidents probed in week

Rockdale police were called to three traffic accidents during the past week. ACCIDENTS—The Rock-dale Volunteer Fire Department and police responded to what was dispatched as a “major accident: a 2:05 p.m. Aug. 13 at the corner of West Cameron and Wilcox (US 79 and FM 487).

ANOTHER HOT ONE

Rockdale’s volunteer firefighters responded to a fire at 680 Cypress Trail at 2:59 p.m. last Wednesday and found “an illegal burn” had spread to a neighbor’s property, according to Fire Chief Ward Roddam.

Missing man’s body found in Panhandle

The body of a 79-year-old Slaton man who was the subject of a search by Milam County authorities last week was found Thursday near Abernathy in the Texas Panhandle.

School retiree group plans supply drive, movie night

Milam County Retired School Personnel Association (MCRSPA) members collected school supplies for all of the schools in Milam County and Caldwell ISD. They delivered a box of school supplies, including teacher necessities to each school in the county and all the schools in Caldwell ISD.

Daniel Marek checked a rat trap last week and found something a bit larger, and scarier, than a rat. Marek said this copperhead measured between 20 and 22 inches. With temperatures hitting triple digits in the area every afternoon snakes can be very active.

‘Back to School’ dance set for Friday evening

MILANO NEWS Milano Parents Club is hosting its “Back to School” dance on Friday from 6-8 p.m. at the Milano Elementary School cafeteria and it is just $5 for the whole family. The group’s first general meeting of the new school years is set for 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 8 at the elementary cafeteria.
