We took a short respite this past week. The first in awhile. It’s not easy, or at least I find that it’s not real easy, to rest during this pandemic. We have found ourselves almost overnight living in a different culture, one that most do not care for.

School plan debut set for Thursday

Rockdale ISD Supt. Dr. Denise Monzingo will announce the district’s plans for the start of the 2020-21 school year in a Zoom (video) call from 7 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday. “The link to the meeting will be emailed to all parents on Thursday,” she said.

We have been enjoying all the fresh tomatoes lately. We’ve been eating lots of BLTs and that salad with cucumbers, tomatoes and onions with vinegar and spices. Here’s a pasta recipe using fresh tomatoes that is uncooked. Now is a good time to make it.

Friend in need

This virus thing is affecting our community in ways we could not have even dreamed. An example. Turn to page 6B. Rockdale’s Kay Theatre is hurting from the lack of bookings caused by the virus. We all know, of course, large gatherings are prime breeders of COVID-19.

Herculean effort getting kids in school

This week the RISD’s announcement is coming after presstime about what the 2020-2021 school year is going to look like. I do not envy those making these decisions. I have a lot of friends who are teachers and a lot of friends with school kids. Some are in both groups.

100 YEARS AGO.... Rockdale was shocked by the sudden death of 53-year-old John Hale Sr., manager of Scarbrough & Hicks firm. Hale had locked up the store, asked his daughter, Louise, to drive him home and passed away from what was termed “acute indigestion.
