Even though June 19 is not an “official” holiday, it is going to feel like one when that date rolls around and the annual Rockdale Juneteenth celebration comes to town. The parade will start at 4 p.m. on June 19. Participants will line up beginning at the corner of Burleson and Cameron.

The county is putting the old Thrasher place on the auction block in an effort to recoup at least part of the $252,828.79 it spent cleaning up what was legally defined a “junkyard” and referred to as an “eyesore” by many. The auction will be at the Milam County Courthouse at 10 a.m. on Aug.

Truck, tractor pull coming to Fair Park

The Rockdale Fair Association will hold the Texas Truck and Tractor Pull at the rodeo arena at Fair Park on June 11-12. Friday night the pull will begin at 7 p.m. with dancing under the stars from 8 to 12 p.m., with music provided by The Other Band.

Churches, city plan citywide swim evening

Local churches in partnership with the city of Rockdale are sponsoring an evening of fun Tuesday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., at the pool in Veterans Park. “This is a great way for families to start the summer,” said Raymon Puente, spokesman for the event that is open to all who wish to come.

VFW Auxiliary seeking school supplies for kids

As one school year ends, the beginning of a new one is just a summer away. Preparation for the coming school year are under way in some areas. The VFW Auxiliary Post 6525 in Rockdale is now accepting donations for its 2021 School Supplies Drive.

Alcoa retirees group to hold meeting, meal

Rockdale Alcoa Retirees will hold a meeting June 10. The meeting will be held at the Thorndale Veteran’s Memorial Hall, formerly the VFW Hall. Doors open at 5 p.m. with the meeting scheduled to begin at 5:45 p.m. A fried catfish meal will be served and donations toward hall rental will be accepted.

Meeting planned for young farmers, ranchers

People ages 18 to 35 with an interest in agriculture have the opportunity to learn more about the Texas Farm Bureau’s Young Farmer and Rancher program beginning June 19 in Lampasas.

Businesses can be part of July 4th celebration

The Rockdale Chamber of Commerce is making plans for the Milam County July 4th Fireworks Celebration on July 4 at Fair Park in Rockdale. The countywide community event is free and will include food vendors and a fireworks display at dark.

Yard of the Month looking for contenders

Rockdale Earth Day is looking for yards in the community to consider for “Yard of the Month.” The program will be implemented through September. Yards must be within the city limits of Rockdale, and nominations are due by the 23rd of the preceding month.
