There was a tall truck, new trucks and old trucks at the first 2020 Apache Pass Barbecue Cookoff and Car Show last weekend. In fact, it was an old—but looking all shiny and new—orange Chevrolet Apache pickup that was the judges’ choice for best of show honors.

As the Tigers enter the last stretch of the season, every game is now critical to earn a playoff spot and good seeding. The Tigers are currently tied for first place in the 11-3A standings. However, the Tigers will face a big test as the 6-2 Academy Bumblebees come to town on Friday.

One road project begins, another starts on Nov.2

Texas Department of Transportation work on one U.S. 79 project started Monday and another one will begin Nov. 2. The project that began Monday will overlay existing pavement on U.S. 79, from 2 miles west of FM 1786 to 2.4 miles west of FM 487.

Work on US 79 to start Nov. 2

Beginning November 2, the Texas Department of Transportation’s  contractor will begin construction operations to smooth and inlay the existing pavement  and perform other miscellaneous work consisting of sidewalks, signals and lighting, drainage structures, and pavement repairs.

Early voting opens around the county

Early voting has begun for the Nov. 3 General Election and will continue until Oct. 30. Milam County had 1,377 total votes cast on the first day of early voting. George Hill Patterson Center in Rockdale had 308 voters while in Cameron 359 people took advantage of early voting.

Abbreviated fair opens with pageant

The COVID-19 abbreviated 45th annual Rockdale Fair continues this weekend after the naming of the Rockdale Fair Queen and baked good competition winners last weekend. Saturday night the new Miss Rockdale Fair Queen Hannah Delz was crowned in a ceremony at the Thorndale Fireman’s Hall.

Only 11 cases but two ‘reinfections’

New COVID-19 cases in Milam County totaled 11 over the past week, up from 519 one week ago to 530 as of Wednesday morning. County Judge Steve Young said there have now been two cases of the virus reinfection in the county.

Flu season is here; time to get shots

October has rolled in and one of the things that rolls in with it is seasonal flu. Every year there is a vaccine produced to fight the ill effects of seasonal flu. This year the Milam County Health Department is offering flu shots for both those 65 and over and the vaccine for those not yet 65.

First Apache Pass car show, barbecue cookoff is set for this weekend

The first Apache Pass Barbecue Cook-Off & Car Show is this weekend at the Apache Pass Events Center, said Nicholas Baggerly of R&B Accessories, Tires and Trailers in Rockdale. In addition to the cookoff and car show, there will be live music both Friday and Saturday nights.

Crime victims coordinator is the right fit for job

After 21 years in law enforcement, Susan De La Rosa decided it was time to retire. But the retirement didn’t take, so she started on a “second career.” “I came out of retirement from law enforcement. I enjoy the routine of a job,” she said.
