James Nicholas “Fugi” Dyer of Rockdale was born Feb. 27, 1966 in San Antonio and was placed in his Dad’s arms ten days later. Fifty-three years later, on Feb. 15, 2020 Fugi was placed in his Heavenly Father’s arms.
A celebration of life service will be held 2 p.m., Saturday, March 7 a day, March 7 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 3739 FM 1712 in Rockdale.
James was a Rockdale native and a member of the RHS class of 1984 and was actively involved in FFA.
He joined the United States Marine Corps in 1984 and served as a firefighter on the flight line for three years. He worked in the oilfield most of his life but also spent time working in landscaping, tree service and cutting firewood.
James was an exceptional baseball player and standout pitcher. He pitched for the AAA team under the San Diego Padres and would frequently practice with the Padres.
James was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church where he enjoyed fishing with the pastor. He earned his nickname Fugi from a fishing hat he wore. He was also a member of the motorcycle family. James had a big heart for helping others and went to great lengths to make sure their needs were met. He had a passion for pecan trees stemming from childhood, planting a tree with his dad in the front yard and watching it mature through the years. He was notorious for picking pecans and selling them to the local market, gifting them to acquaintances, or enjoying eating them with friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, W.T. Dyer, paternal grandparents, Nicholas and Mary Dyer and maternal grandparents, Preston and Leota McClure, Vee McClure, and Doris McClure.
Fugi is survived by a son, Travis of Rockdale, two daughters, Brandi Dyer of El Campo and Brittaney Davenport and husband, Dustin of Gatesville. He is also survived by his six grandchildren, Elainia, Eli, Serenia, Kylie, Kala and Nicholas; his mother, Winnie Dyer of Temple; sister, Debbie Bergert and husband, Doug of Temple; nieces and nephews, Jeremiah, Jordan, Hannah, Hailey and numerous family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, crack a pecan and enjoy it for Fugi.
