Mr. Spence

Rodney Clarence Spence, 92, was born Nov. 10, 1932, in the Forest Grove c ommu n i ty, south of Rockdale, to Henr y a nd Carr ie Kyle Spence.

He passed from this life on June 20, 2025, at his home su r rounded by his loving wife Lu of almost 70 years, his children and their families.

He g raduated f rom Rockdale High School in 1950.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1953-55.

On Nov. 6, 1955, he married Luella (Lu) Sager. This union produced three children, Gary Spence, Glen Spence, and Shari Rahm.

Rodney joined Alcoa in 1952, beginning a 40-year career ending with his retirement in 1992.

Rod enjoyed many years of service to Forest Grove Christian Church and the Rockdale community. He ser ved his communit y in many ways, including 40-plus years in the Rockdale Fair Association, a member of the Rockdale Roping and Cutting Club, coach/manager of multiple Rockdale Little League teams and served as president of the Rockdale Little League. He was also a referee of area basketball games for over 25 years as a Southwest Basketball Officials Association member.

He served on the Rockdale ISD School Board and as a deacon and elder of the Forest Grove Christian Church.

Rodney was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Carrie Spence; sister Rubye Ellen Brown and husband Elbert; sister Roxy Ann Bingham and husband Si Lee; brother Kyle Spence and wife Marilyn; niece Marie Spence Wheaton; and nephew Bert Brown.

Survivors include his wife, Luella (Lu) Sager Spence; sons Gary Spence and wife Marcie of College Station and Glen Spence of Rockdale; and daughter Shari Rahm of Spring.

He is also survived by grandchildren Lauren Bruchez of McKinney, Zachary Spence and wife Michelle of Fort Worth, Heather Rahm and friend Taylor Weinhold of Magnolia, Spence Rahm of Round Rock; and great-grandchildren Bella and Barrett Bruchez, Macie and Hallie Davis.

Also surviving is brother Claude Spence and wife LaNell Spence of Forest Grove, along with many loving cousins, nieces and nephews, as well as a host of cherished friends.
