—In their first halftime appearance since earning the UIL’s highest rating at marching contest, Director Adrian Acevedo’s Big Blue Band took the field in Cameron Friday night. Big Blue got Division I (Superior) ratings Oct. 20 in marching contest at Giddings.

Thorndale student heads to state contest

THORNDALE—Thorn-dale High School student, Jacob Pedroza, will have a chance to earn additional funds for college in Texas Farm Bureau’s Free Enterprise Speech Contest. District winners like Pedroza will compete in the state level competition at the TFB annual meeting in Corpus Christi Dec. 1-3.

BROWSERS

—The 2018 Rockdale Fair’s home economics division drew lots of interested browsers and 466 entries last week in the New Salem HD clubhouse at Fair Park. That’s a substantial increase over the 374 entries in the 2017 Fair.

GOVERNOR’S AWARD

—The Milano Volunteer Fire Department captured the Governor’s Award in Saturday morning’s Fair Parade. It featured the MVFD’s Miss Flame, Kayli Yakesch along with Milano pageant contestants Lily Jones, Caylee Butler, Kylie Yakesch, Jolee Keen, Jesalyn Miller and Mallory Miller.

ROCKDALE CHRISTIAN SERVICES

RCS food pantry Rockdale Christian Services operates a food pantry at 224 West Cameron Avenue, open 10 a.m. until noon weekdays. Donations of non-perishable food items are welcome, especially one-pound bags of rice, pinto beans, macaroni and cheese, canned soups and peanut butter.

Volunteers get awards from RFA Saturday

Appreciation plaques were bestowed Saturday before the annual Fir Youth Livestock Auction by the Rockdale Fair Association (RFA). Russell Fischer was named the RFA’s outstanding member of the year.
