Tillery, Springer win awards

When veteran Rockdale Police Department Sgt. Jody Tillery won the offi - cer-of-the year award for the fourth straight time Saturday night, he knew just how to phrase the historic honor. “I’m the oldest one in the department, except for the chief,” he told the crowd of more than 200.

MVFD chili supper to be held Saturday

Milano Volunteer Fire Department’s annual chili supper set for Saturday at the fire station. Serving begins at 4:30 p.m. until sold out. Prices are $8 for adults, $4 for children 12 and under, with those two and under eating free. There will be a live band, as well as live and silent auctions.

City, county sales taxes heading down

Rockdale and Milam County’s 2018 sales tax “rally” didn’t last long. After inching into the black with 2018’s first sales tax check in January, the February figures were back in the red, both for the month and the year. Milam County’s February total was $83,589.

Big Blue Band members get awards

PFLUGERVILLE—On Saturday, members of the Rockdale High School Big Blue Band participated at the UIL Solo and Ensemble Contest held at Hendrickson High School. Top ratings included: • Brianna Acevedo, flute solo, Superior (Division 1). • Natalie Banda, alto saxophone solo, Superior (Division 1).

CAMERON—Seventeen persons were sentenced during the past two weeks in 20th District Court, according to Prosecutor Bill Torrey, as follows: • Robert Leroy Chappell, 28, Bryan, five-year prison term after pleading “true” to a motion to revoke probation for sexual assault of child.

Filing deadline ahead on Friday for city, school

With the filing deadline set for Friday, there were several developments in the May 5 city, school and special district elections. Rockdale got its first contested race when Ryan Warner filed for the Place 7 school board position currently held by Julia Cardona, who had previously filed.

BUSINESS OF THE MONTH—Perry & Perry Builders Inc. has been named business of the month for February by the Rock-dale Chamber of Commerce. Joining Lin Perry and employees for the banner presentation were Chamber officers, directors, staff members and well wishers.
