MILAM RECORDS THIRD COVID-19 DEATH

  From County Judge Steve Young: Wednesday we had a death in the county.  The individual had been tested about one week ago and had gone home.  The person’s symptoms became worse and the person died at home Wednesday, before going to a hospital.  This brings our death toll in the county to three.

Fall election gets extended early voting

Texans will get an extended early voting period for the Nov. 3 general election. The period will now begin Tuesday, Oct. 13 and continue through Friday, Oct. 30. The governor’s proclamation also expands the period in which marked mail-in ballots may be delivered to an early-voting clerk’s office.

Milano, Thorndale classes set

Students in the Milano and Thorndale ISDs are set to return to classes next month—with options to study at-home online—as the two districts have released plans to begin the 2020-21 school term under the giant shadow that is the COVID-19 pandemic.

Gause ISD announces plans

The Gause Independent School District has announced school opening plans for 2020-2021 and like other South Milam ISDs it will be a mix of in-person and online learning. First day of class is Thursday, Aug. 13.

County eyes grant

CAMERON—Milam County Commissioners closed out their “big swap” in a regular session Monday morning and now they have several tense weeks of waiting to see if the county will get a key grant.

Basil Pesto

2 cups fresh basil 2 cloves garlic (chopped) 1/4 cup chopped walnuts 1/2 cup olive oil 1/4 tsp kosher salt 1/4 tsp black pepper 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese Place the basil and garlic in a blender or food processor. Add the walnuts. Add the salt, pepper and olive oil.

Salsa Verde

6 tbsp olive oil 3 tbsp capers, drained and coarsely chopped 2 tbsp finely chopped Italian parsley 2 garlic cloves, minced 1-1/2 tsp lemon juice 1/2 tsp finely grated lemon zest 1/8 tsp. kosher salt Pinch of red pepper flakes Combine the ingredients in a small bowl, and whisk to mix well.
