Milton R. “Jim” Currey, 97, a long-time Rockdale business owner, passed away early Thursday morning, Aug. 27, 2020, at his home in Rockdale, surrounded by his family.

Jim was born Feb. 26, 1923, in Rockdale to Peter Oliver and Ruby E. (Kelly) Currey.

After his high school graduation, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II from January 1943 to February 1946 and was honorably discharged as a Tech 4.

Leaving Henderson in 1946, Jim came to Rockdale.

On July 6, 1946, he married Novelene Caffey in Rockdale. To this union three children were born.

Jim was the owner of Jim Currey Real Estate in Rockdale and was also a rancher.

He was a member of Forest Grove Christian Church, the Rockdale Noon Lions Club, American Legion Carlyle Post 358 and the Rockdale Volunteer Fire Department.

He enjoyed race horses, ranching, fishing, camping, boating and riding horses.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Peter Oliver and Ruby Currey; his wife, Novelene Currey on May 21, 2009; two sisters, Tommie Russel and Evelyn Sellers; and a brother, Lee Augustus Currey.

Surviving are his children, a son, Michael Ray Currey and wife Deborah of Rockdale; two daughters, Marcia A. Bastow and husband Jack, Nancy Bell and husband Doug, all of Rockdale; 12 grandchildren, Daniel, Matthew, James, Caleb, Gabriel and John Currey, Keith Bastow, Kelli Timmerman, Coty Prazak, T.J. Bell, Jessica Janak and Ashley Zimmerman; 13 great-grandchildren, Cara Currey, Garrett Timmerman, Lane, Tyler and Dustyn Prazak, Gracey and Brayden Burns, Luke Janak, Kaitlyn and Jacob Bell, Sharee Bundrick, Kiersten Coulter and Laynie Bastow; and four great-great-grandchildren, Brentlee Prazak, Brody and Ellie Coulter and Arrabella Harmon.

Funeral services, with military honors, were held Wednesday, Sept. 2, at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale with Pastor Lance Walch and Pastor Jim Platt officiating.

Burial followed at Forest Grove Cemetery in the Forest Grove community.

Pallbearers were T.J. Bell, Daniel Currey, Matthew Currey, Garrett Timmerman, Lane Prazak, and Tyler Prazak.

Honorary pallbearers were the Rockdale Noon Lions Club and the 1962 American Legion Baseball Team.
