Fred Johnson

BURNET—Fred Johnson of Burnet, formerly of Rockdale, died Friday, Feb. 12, 2021.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, 2021, at Lakeland Hills Memorial Park, 4219 Park Road 4 South, in Burnet. He will be laid to rest next to wife, Martha Johnson, who preceded him in death in on Feb. 14, 2016.

Mr. Johnson was the head football coach at Rockdale High School from 1973 to 1980. He guided the Tigers to five district championships and to their first state football championship in 1976. He was named the Class 2A Coach of the Year for his efforts.

His coaching career also included stints at Kerrville Tivy, Mission, Gonzales, Angleton, Midlothian and Rosenburg Terry before retiring in 1989. Mr. Johnson was inducted

Mr. Johnson was inducted into the Rockdale Sports Hall of Fame in 2011, as well as the Kerrville Tivy Hall of Fame, where he was a standout athlete.

He was a U.S. Army veteran and a Rice University graduate, where he played football and ran track.

Survivors include a son, Glenn Johnson, and a daughter, Cindy Thomas.
