Mrs. Howell was born June 30, 1924, to Harry R. Shurr and Violet Hummell Shurr in Sinking Springs, Pennsylvania.

She graduated from Gil-ford College in Greensboro, North Carolina, with a degree in English literature.

Mrs. Howell had a dry sense of humor, was an avid reader and loved to quote poetry. She also enjoyed traveling and nature, often bird watching, gardening and taking long walks in the woods.

She valued her family and friends above everything else. She would speak with so much pride about her nine brothers that served in the military during World War II. She made lifelong friends, including pen pals from Wales and Scotland.

Mrs. Howell was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Violet Shurr; her foster parents, Charles and Hannah Hilbert; and her husband, W. Burney Howell; also, 12 brothers, and three sisters.

Survivors are a son, William B. Howell Jr. and wife Lisa; and four daughters, Susan Barefoot and husband Aldos, Diane Old, Cynthia A. Havard and husband Don, Janice S. Haverland and husband David; also, 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

The family extends a special thank you to the nurses and staffs at Garden Estates, Park Place Manor and Blue Bonnet Hospice.

Violet S. Howell, 95 of Temple, died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2020.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, at First Presbyterian Church of Rockdale,
