Charles “Cotton” Hubert, 85, died Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2019.

He was born Jan. 15, 1934, to Jessie Lewis Hubert and Ralph Hubert in the Minerva community of Milam County.

Mr. Hubert grew up in the Depression era, learning at an early age work ethic and fiscal prudence. As a boy he worked on local farms and ranches, with crops and livestock.

He attended schools in Minerva, Bushdale and Livingston, then graduated from Rockdale High School in 1951.

After high school, Mr. Hubert went to work with Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. in Houston. He stayed with Bell/AT&T until his retirement in 1991. During his tenure, he worked as a mail clerk, coin collector (from pay phones), service rep, sales rep, forecast engineer, planning manager and area manager of planning. He worked mostly in Houston, but also in Chicago and Austin.

While working, Mr. Hubert attended night school at the University of Houston, earning a bachelor’s degree in business administration.

He also had business interests in land development, including owning and operating Brangus cattle ranches in Caldwell and Milam counties.

He excelled at time management and his priorities were God, family, work and community, in that order.

Mr. Hubert was an avid reader with a special interest in Texas History and the Civil War. He enjoyed genealogy, rodeos, bowling and traveling.

He was a “conservative’s conservative” Republican.

Mr. Hubert was involved in the preservation and upkeep of Minerva Cemetery.

He was an active member of Murray Street Church of Christ in Rockdale. He was baptized in 1952 in a little Church of Christ in Wilcox.

Mr. Hubert served as a Bible teacher and preached as needed in area churches. He actively helped fund Christian radio and orphanages in Texas.

He married Kittie J. Williams in January 1952 and she preceded him in death.

Then in 1975, he married Willie Marie Matthews of Cleborne in Austin.

Mr. Hubert was also preceded in death by a son, Jim Hubert, and a stepson, Bobby McCord. His older brother, Don, died less than a week after Charles’ death.

Survivors are his wife, Marie; a daughter, Carol Hubert; a stepdaughter, Susan McCord; a brother, Jack Hubert; and a sister, Margaret Denman; also, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
