Lera Mae Matous

Lera Mae Matous, 89, of Rockdale died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2024, in College Station.

A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 18, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Cyclone with Pastor Ranjan Cletus officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17, with a rosary at 7 p.m. at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale.

Mrs. Matous was born on March 17, 1934, in Cyclone to Wilbert L. and Leona H. (Geistmann) Girndt.

She had lived in Rockdale since 1968 and was formerly of Temple.

She ma r r ied L ad i s Matous on May 14, 1955, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Cyclone.

Mrs. Matous was a devoted wife and loving mother to six children. She dedicated her life first to her Lord and Savior, then to her family and community. Everyone that met her, loved her.

She was known for her quick wit, exuberant smile, sense of humor and unique ability to make everyone feel at ease and comfortable.

Mrs. Matous enjoyed a number of hobbies including caring for her pet turtles, baking, gardening, reading and working crossword puzzles. She was also a talented seamstress and made custom clothes for her children and members of the community.

She was a devout member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Rockdale, serving on the Ladies Auxiliary there, as well as the Rockdale Volunteer Fire Department and VFW.

She will be dearly missed by ever yone for tunate enough to know her.

Mrs. Matous was preceded in death by her parents, Wilbert and Leona Girndt; husband Ladis Matous; brother Hulen Girndt; and sisters Corene Woods and LaVerne Hoelscher.

Survivors are her sons, Wesley Matous and wife Karen of Morgan’s Point, Wayne Matous and wife Darlene of College Station, Wendell Matous and Warren Matous, both of Rockdale; daughters Carol Worley and husband Jason of Rockdale, Chery Moore and husband Geoffrey of Spring; and grandchildren Jessica and Bryan Thurston, Jarod Matous and Julia Guerrero, Kyle and Torrie Matous, Jamie Matous, Allison Matous and James Winters, Shayna Matous Lockhart and Jason Lockhart, Makenlee and Noah Brinkmeyer, and Noah Haven; also, seven great-grandchildren and one on the way.

Pallbearers will be Barton Crain, Brian Wallis, Charles Alford, Dwayne David, Johnny Stewart and Trent Wages.

In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to the Rockdale Volunteer Fire Department, 301 N. Wilcox, Rockdale, TX 76567.
