Mass for Jose “Joe” Lopez, 80, of Rockdale is set for 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 21, 2021, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rockdale with Rev. Pedro Castillo officiating. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery in Rockdale. Visitation will be from 6

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. with a rosary at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 20, at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale.

Mr. Lopez died Tuesday, Oct. 5, at Zion of Cypress Nursing & Rehab in Houston.

He was born Sept. 12, 1941, in Rockdale to Canuto and Tereza (Castillo) Lopez.

Mr. Lopez worked as a ground’s keeper with Rockdale Independent School District until his retirement in 2008. He lived most of his life in Rockdale.

Mr. Lopez was preceded in death by his parents, Canuto and Tereza Lopez; three brothers, Pedro “Pete” Lopez, Catrino “Cat” Montelongo Sr., Santiago “Jimmy” Castillo Montelongo; a sister, Cirila “Carol” Gonzales; and a brother-in-law, Frank “Pancho” Gonzales.

Survivors are his sons, Joseph A. Lopez and wife Yvonne M. of Katy, Canuto Lopez of Middle River, Maryland; his daughters, Ariel A. Lopez and Nancy Castaneda, both of Round Rock; a sister, Marie Zapata of Rockdale; a brother, Paul Lopez of Rockdale; nine grandchildren, Adam A. Lopez, Isabel T. Lopez, Malachi A. Dilworth, James Castaneda, III, Jaydon Castaneda, Johnan Castaneda, Abram Castaneda, Amara Castaneda and Lorenzo Jackson; his former spouse, Rosaria Rangel of Taylor; and a son-in-law, James Castaneda of Milano.

Pallbearers will be Isaac Lopez, Sunny Perez, Matthew Montelongo, Maurilio “Mike” Zapata, Malachi Dilworth, James Castaneda III, Robert Zapata Sr. and Robert Zapata Jr.
