Mary S. Alvarado Mata, 81, of Rockdale died Saturday, Feb. 11, 2023, at her home in Rockdale surrounded by her family.

A celebration of life will be held at 2 p. m. Satur day, Feb. 18, at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale. Burial will be at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Rockdale.

She was born Nov. 12, 1941, to Horacio and Crisanta Rios Alvarado.

Mary and Moses Mata were married in Calvert on Nov. 11, 1962, and began their life and family together in Rockdale.

A few years later, they moved to Houston, where they added to their family.

During 15 years of this time, Mrs. Mata was employed by the Dover Corp.

She was an excellent cook, often preparing meals and other treats for family and loved ones when they came to visit.

She loved being outside with her family, camping, fishing, and going to the beach on South Padre Island. Everyone always anticipated the fried chicken that she would make before going to the beach.

Mrs. Mata was preceded in death by her parents, Horacio and Crisanta Alvarado; a sister, Gloria Cavazos; and two brothers, Salvador Alvarado and Rudy Alvarado.

Survivors are her husband, Moses Mata of Rockdale; her children, Wayne Mata and wife Yolanda of Porter, Rey Mata and husband David, Sonya M. Gonzales, and Melisia Luera, all of Rockdale, Jaime Mata and wife Jamie of Spring; and two sisters, Maria Elena Ruiz of Rockdale and Eva Mata of Hockley; also, 10 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Jonathan Ross Mata, Moses Lorenzo Mata, Joshua Ray Gonzales, Justin Roarke Gonzales, Jacob Anthony Mata, Jace Michael Mata, Robert Joseph Luera and Jesse Rodriguez.
