Owen

Grant George Owen, born Dec. 12, 1941, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, died peacefully at his home in Rockdale surrounded by family on Saturday, Aug. 6.

Visitation begins at 1 p.m., followed by a celebration of life at 2 p.m. Sun day, Aug. 21, at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Chapel in Rockdale.

His life was filled with travel and adventure.

Mr. Owen was educated across four states, and was an excellent student and athlete, attending Colorado School of Mines on a football scholarship.

He signed to play with the Denver Broncos, but chose instead to continue his education as a metallurgical engineer.

During 40 years with Alcoa, Mr. Owen worked in over half a dozen facilities across several states, Tennessee, Indiana, Texas and California, as well as overseas assignments in Wales and Australia.

A devoted husband, father and papa, he loved being involved in all family activities.

He participated in a wide range of sports and enjoyed most outdoor pursuits, but his lifelong passion was horses. He enjoyed riding and racing for most of his life.

Upon returning to Rockdale the second time, he spent decades raising, training and racing quarter horses.

Mr. Owen was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Margaret Owen, and a sister Gwen Wait.

Survivors are his wife of 54 years, Patricia (Thomas) Owen; a sister, Marie O’Connell and husband Bob of Arizona; a brother, Paul Owen and wife Mary of Colorado; and three children and five grandchildren, son Eric and wife April of Huntsville, son Clint and wife Jennifer and granddaughters Emily, Allison and Sydney of Rockdale, daughter Ginger Rundell and husband Rhyne and grandsons Evan and Elliott of McKinney.

Memorial donations may be made to Parkinson’s disease research organizations or First Presbyterian Church of Rockdale.
