Ruby “Nena” Simpson, 75, of Tanglewood died Friday, Sept. 28, 2018, at Seton Medical Center in Austin.

No public services are scheduled.

Ms. Simpson was born April 20, 1943, in Phoenix, Arizona, to Clyde Edger and Ruby Augusta (King) Newman.

She lived in Tanglewood for over 50 years and had previously lived in Thrall.

Ms. Simpson was an electrician at Alcoa, and had retired in 2006 after 29 years.

She was a member of United Steelworkers Local 4895 and was the first female elected to the executive board.

She also served with the Alcoa fire brigade and EMS as and EMT and was a volunteer with the Lexington EMS and the Tanglewood VFD, where she also served as secretary.

Ms. Simpson was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church and enjoyed being involved with her children and grandchildren in all their activities.

In her younger years, she enjoyed trail rides, going to the lake and to the coast, and fishing. She also played in Lee County women’s softball league.

Ms. Simpson was preceded in death by her parents, Clyde Edgar and Ruby Augusta Newman; a sister, Ida Pharis; and two brothers, Jack Newman and Clyde “Eddie” Newman; also, two brothers in infancy.

Survivors are a son, Doug Simpson and wife Robyn of Tanglewood; a daughter, Sandy Simpson Bates and husband James of Tanglewood; a brother, James “Jim” Newman and wife Margaret of Lexington; two sisters-in-law, Carmel Newman of Thrall and Barbara “Bobbie” Newman of Kentucky; her grandchildren, Ashlena Hansen and husband Weston, Trisha Simpson Biddle and husband Rick, Coe Janner, Heather Goolsby, Amber Mosley, Samantha Ordones and Natalee David; and her great-grandchildren, Devan Simpson, Bexlee Janner, Dawson Hansen, Billy Hruska, Kayden McColm, Mason Mosley, Mattie Mosley, Nicho Ordones, Isabella Ordones, Abigail Ordones and Violet David.
