Vasterling

Leslie Eugene Vasterling died peacefully on Saturday, April 9, 2022, at the near Rockdale.

He was born June 7, 1935 in Austin. Les was born at home in east Austin, the middle of five siblings, the other four have preceded him in death.

Les attended Austin High School and a local technical school. He studied surveying and was the youngest to receive his surveying license at that time.

He worked for Bryant Curington Inc. for many years before taking a job with Haufler Excavation, where he excelled at excavation when he found new ways to solve difficult excavation problems, which resulted in his name being considered for the 1973-1974 edition of Who’s Who In Texas.

Les married Darla, a draftsman at Bryant Curington, with a degree in architectural studies, on Sept. 7, 1968. Shortly thereafter both sons moved in.

While still working our full-time jobs, they began a horse business in 1973. At one time they had 90 horses and one full-time employee. Many of the horses competed in shows and often won ribbons or awards. Les goal was to produce a great paint cutting horse.

Les bought out Haufler Excavating which did really well until the banking crash in the 1980s.

The Vasterlings bought 60 acres on Gilbert Lane for both the horse and excavating businesses, which were traded for the farm in near Rockdale.

Les wants friends not to grieve but to celebrate his life.
