Linda Dawn Whorton, 81, of Ro ckdale passed away Tuesday, March 12, 2024, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in College Station.

A celebrat io n of l i f e was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 16, at Meadowbrook Baptist Church in Mrs. Whorton Rockdale with Pastor Stephen Ammons officiating, assisted by Bro. Rick Mitchell of Calvary Baptist Church in Caldwell.

Linda was born on Aug. 20, 1942, to Thomas Carlton and Bonnie Irene (Hudgens) Land in Bangs.

She graduated from Brownwood High School in 1960 and, later in life, she attended Temple (Junior) College.

On July 2, 1960, she married Warren Dale Whorton in Brownwood.

Linda worked at Southwestern Bell before the family moved to California in 1966. The family returned to Texas in 1970 and moved to Rockdale in 1973.

She began working at The Rockdale Reporter & Messenger in 1979, working as a typesetter and later in classifieds ads. She was employed there for 36 years until her retirement in 2015.

Linda was a member of Meadowbrook Baptist Church in Rockdale and formerly a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Caldwell.

She was a long-time member of the Milam County Genealogical Society, where she was the newsletter editor.

Linda enjoyed painting, cooking, genealogy, crocheting and cross-stitching.

She was kind and caring to everyone and she will be well remembered for her wonderful laugh and a smile that could light up the room.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Carlton and Bonnie Land.

Linda is survived by her husband of 63 years, Warren Whorton of Rockdale; four children, Derric Whorton and wife June of College Station, Shannon Whorton of Rockdale, Shellie Dawn Jones and husband Dwayne of Rockdale, Justin Whorton and wife Evlin of Euless; four grandchildren, Travis “T.J.” Sorenson, Jessie Dawn Bruns and husband Cody, Haley Whorton and Santiago Whorton; a great-granddaughter, Lila Dawn Bruns; and four siblings, Suellen Mahanay of Whitney, Thomas Land and wife Cindy of Comanche, Albert Land and wife Debbie of Granbury, and Bonnie Ann Freeman and husband Tommy of Cisco.
