Two more traditional June events have fallen victim—only for 2020—to COVID-19 and restrictions on large crowds. Rockdale’s annual Juneteenth activities would have been held this Sunday. The 30th annual Thorndale VFD Barbecue Cookoff would have been staged the last weekend in June.

RISD budget based on 9.6-cent tax hike

Rockdale ISD trustees met in regular session Monday evening and adopted a $16.253-million budget for 2020-2021, based on a 9.6-cent increase in the school tax rate. Board members met in the junior-high commons, rather than the Central Administration Building, in order to maintain social distancing.

Autopsy report awaited after collapse on road

The Milam County Sheriff’s Department is awaiting autopsy reports after a 38-year-old Austin native died after collapsing on a rural Milam County Road Friday Sheriff Chris White identified the man as Hans Oliver Tweeten. White said at approximately 9:50 a.m.

No damage in smoke scare at elementary

There was no damage to Rockdale Elementary School in what turned out to be a smoke scare call at 6:36 a.m. Monday. Police received a call that smoke was coming from the school’s roof and sent the RVFD to the scene.

Numerous drugs netted in arrest

The Friday arrest of a 25-year-old Rockdale man netted a number of drugs, according to Rockdale police. Markus Keith Hayes was charged with possession of drugs in four different categories and also with unlawfully carrying a weapon. He was released on $42,500 bond.
