U.S. immigration policy has been badly broken for more than two decades. Attempts by former Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama to craft reasonable, sweeping immigration policies stalled, then cratered under the weight of partisan opposition in Congress from the party not in the White House.
In John’s Gospel story of the feeding of the 5000, he gives us this special detail. When everyone had eaten their fill, Jesus told his disciples, “Gather up the fragments left over, that nothing may be lost.” So they gathered them up and filled twelve baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves.
Afew weeks ago I had one of the worst weeks I’ve had in about the last ten years. It started out by me doing what I am supposed to do, praying for my enemies. My prayers were accurate, I was praying for God to bless them, and I was even asking the Lord, how I could be the one to do the good. How could I be a blessing to the people that, if I was not so holy, I would be hoping they got the shingles and died, or at least got a bad cold.
