100 YEARS AGO... Miss Fannie Arthur, staying at the home of Mr. and Mrs. E.F. Ousley, was awaken by the presence of someone in her room. She got out of bed to turn on the light and ran against a man who seized her arm.

Springfield Baptist welcomes with open arms

I was invited to Springfield Baptist Church by Henry Miller to take some photos for the paper of the kids doing their Black History Month program, and I really had a good time. I saw lots of people I knew and the kids did a great job, but the music made me stay for the whole thing.

FEMA disaster claims made easy for county

Just one week ago we were dealing with an historic freeze in Milam County. We experienced record cold temperatures of almost 300 hours below freezing. Obviously when the pipes began to thaw we all realized we had a lot of property damage.

The big chill

Once again Rockdale showed that we can get through tough times together if we help each other out. There was so much good going on during the bad parts of this unusually cold weather. How about Lee Lee Parsley giving away all of his firewood so people could stay warm without electricity?

Cold weather tests Texans who aren’t used to it

Our house is in a small line of houses whose electricity is all connected. We suffer outages fairly regularly due to transformers blowing out and sometimes limbs falling since we are right up next to the woods. So naturally it happened during last week’s snowy weather.

Historic grant awarded to county for renovations

Last Friday we learned that Milam County had been awarded the single largest grant in its history! The total grant amount is 4.7 million dollars and it will be used to renovate the former Little River hospital building in Cameron for county administrative purposes.
