Belinda Gest van Goten’s career as a bus drive came to an end Wednesday when her coworkers in the transportation department at Rockdale Independent School District threw her a surprise party in the bus barn.

Rockdale’s monthly report shows improvement

RCS food pantry Rockdale Christian Services operates a food pantry at 224 West Cameron Avenue, open 10 a.m. until noon weekdays. Donations of non-perishable food items are welcome, especially one-pound bags of rice, pinto beans, macaroni and cheese, canned soups and peanut butter.

Splash pad unveiling

The city will unveil the new splash pad at a grand opening at 4 p.m. Friday at Sumuel Park, 210 East Fourth Ave.

American Legion plans Sunday benefit for Starr

American Legion Carlyle Post 358 in Rockdale will have a “turkey shoot” June 6 at 2534 N. FM 487.   This event is to benefit Charles Starr, someone who has helped many people in this area and who now needs help. Gates will open at 11 a.m. and competition is to begin at noon.

COVID-19 claims 49th life

The respiratory illness, COVID-19, has claimed its 49th victim in Milam County. The latest fatality was an unvaccinated woman who contracted the virus, became ill, eventually went to the hospital and was put on a ventilator. She never recovered.  "Get vaccinated.

Holiday closings, tributes

All city and county offices will be closed to commemorate Memorial Day on Monday. Area banks and the credit union will also be closed that day. The Rockdale Reporter will also be closed for that holiday.

MDD takes steps toward new director

Rockdale’s MDD board took a step closer to hiring an executive director Monday when it voted to set up interviews with three contenders for the position. The Municipal Development District board told interim director Uryan Nelson to set up the three interviews between June 7 and 11.
