Third death as case count slows

By MIKE BROWN Reporter Editor It was the best of weeks; it was the worse of weeks. While active COVID-19 cases in Milam County fell to their lowest number in almost two months, and the rate of new cases continued to slow, the county recorded its third death.

'Remote’ restrictions

Students in the Rockdale ISD who choose all-remote (on-line) as school starts won’t be able to participate in extra-curricular activities or take elective classes. School trustees met Friday and approved those restrictions.

Tax rates not rising in 2020

It’s tax-rate-setting time for Rockdale area entities and three of the four who have property taxing authority over local residents have indicated there won’t be any tax rate increases on the way in 2020 The fourth is waiting for guidance from a state agency.

St. Monica’s Catholic Church in Cameron will hold its annual Homecoming Festival on Sunday, Aug. 16, starting at 10:30 a.m. Barbecue plates with all the trimmings will be available for $10 until sold out. Tamales and sweets will also be sold.

Meal pickup plan announced in RISD

When classes begin Aug. 13 in the Rockdale ISD, Southwest Food Service Excellence will provide meals-to-go for students choosing virtual learning. Breakfast and lunch will be provided as a drive-through service from 11:15 to 11:45 a.m. at the junior-high.
