As the snow began to melt last week, Rockdale High School track and field teams made their way out to the football field for their first practices of the 2021 season. Workouts weren’t long, due to cold weather that lingered between the mid-40’s and high 50’s.

Bee sting: Undefeated Academy teams cause trouble in Rockdale

A young Tiger squad was challenged at home Friday, when they went up against top-ranked Academy, where the Bees took the game 75-41. Chris Perez led RHS with 14, Colton Bradshaw had 10 and Raymond McBride had five. This contest marks the end of the first half of their district slate.

It seemed early in Friday’s game at the RHS Gym that the Rockdale girls’ basketball team was holding their own with Academy, a team undefeated in district play, as they stayed within reach and trailed 11-5 at the close of the opening quarter.

First-year coach Shirley Lozano and the Lady Tigers played in their first tourney over the season when they travelled to Cameron. The Rockdale squad opened this past Thursday with an 8-0 loss to Navasota. On Friday, RHS fell 6-0 to Academy.

Flowers, Navarro win their divisions

Over the weekend, the RHS powerlifting teams’ competed in their first meet of the season and came home satisfied. Sophomore Bryce Flowers won first place in the boys’ 148 pound weight class and senior Jesenia Navarro also got the top prize in the girls’ 114 pound division.

Lady Bulldogs topple Thrall once again

Once Thorndale’s Bailee Baker hit a three to tie the game 3-3 early in the first quarter, Thrall would never lead again in the Lady Bulldogs 58-27 victory in Williamson County on Friday night.

MHS squads have hard time in Holland

Milano High School’s basketball teams made their way up to Holland this Friday where the Eagles fell 64-54 to the Hornets. Bryson Richards led with 15. Jayce Todd and Weston Avrett had 12. The Lady Eagles also left Bell County with a loss, losing 51-19 to the eighthranked team in Class 2A.

RHS to hold recruiting process

Last week, RHS announced via Facebook that the school plans to hold a seminar for student-athletes on Monday, Jan. 25, in the RHS auditorium. RISD athletic director Jacob Campsey has put together the event in order to provide knowledge about the college recruiting experience.
