Rockdale site for 2018 Milam 4-H banquet, awards

MILAM 4-H NEWS Rockdale will be the site of the 2018 Milam County 4-H Banquet. A site in Rockdale has not yet been selected. Watch this column for news when the location is picked.

WINNERS

—The Thorndale Area Chamber of Commerce float was runner-up in the Best Out-of-Town Float division of the recent McDade Watermelon Festival Parade. Riding on the float were (L-R) Miss Thorndale Ashton Kiesling, Junior Miss Natalie Newton and Miss Thorndale Runner-up, Lauren Newton.

PERFECT TIMING—

When the temperatures hit 105-plus for a solid week it’s a perfect time to go jump in the city pool. That’s exactly what clients of the Milam Adult Resource Center (MARC) did last week in combination with the organization’s annual membership dinner.

Water summit ahead Aug. 15

Date for the 2018 Milam and Burleson Counties Groundwater Summit has been set for Aug. 15. Hours are from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Caldwell Civic Center. All are encouraged to attend, according to the Post Oak Savannah Groundwater Conservation District, which hosts the annual event.

STORK REPORT HAPPY BIRTHDAY

Jennifer Castillo and Robert Castillo Jr. of Rockdale announce the birth of their daughter, Sophia Renee Castillo, on July 10, 2018, at St. David’s Georgetown Hospital. She weighed 7 pounds, 13 ounces and measured 20 inches long. Grandparents are Jesse and Virginia Ramos, Robert and Olga Castillo.

Stuart Hamblen’s greatest hit—and why

“This is the victory that overcomes the world—our faith.” (I John 5:4) Stuart Hamblen was a popular singer, songwriter, actor, poet and radio personality from the 1930s through the 1950s. He appeared as the bad guy in films with Roy Rogers and Gene Autry.

ROCKDALE CHRISTIAN SERVICES

RCS food pantry Rockdale Christian Services operates a food pantry at 224 West Cameron Avenue, open 10 a.m. until noon weekdays. Donations of non-perishable food items are welcome, especially one-pound bags of rice, pinto beans, macaroni and cheese, canned soups and peanut butter.

There’s knowing Jesus and really knowing Him

He told me to tell you that The house is quiet today. I’m a germaphobe and have not been sick in a million years (the result of hand washing). I mean I have not had a cold or a sniffle but Friday night the Grim Reaper came for a weekend visit.
