He survived Iwo Jima

Ninety-four year old Gene Luckey (center), who was wounded as a US Marine on Iwo Jima in 1945, was a ‘rock star’ at Monday’s Rockdale ISD Veterans Day observance in the high school gym. Luckey and Roy Becker, also 94, (see page 6B) were the two World War II veterans in attendance.

County seizes Rockdale ‘junkyard’

The Milam County Sheriff’s Department seized the controversial “junkyard” at 1300 and 1328 West Cameron (US 79) on Monday. Owner Ira Richard “Richie” Thrasher Jr., 43, was charged with bond forfeiture for bail jumping/failure to appear and illegal dumping and is being held on $107,500 bond.

Tiger Learning Center wins awards

The emphasis is definitely on the “learning” part of the Tiger Learning Center at the Rockdale Independent School District (RISD. The center, located on the elementary campus, provides day care for children of RISD employees and others affiliated with the school system.

Punch, threat nets ‘aggravated’ charge

Rockdale police said a family incident in which a woman was punched in the face and threatened with a gun drew an aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charge Friday. Lt. Stephen Goodrich said Tyler Burge, 27, was also charged with interfering with an emergency request for assistance.
