Howling good time

“Lucy,” who needs a home, was not the only one who had a great time Friday morning when Rockdale PAWS (Pet Adoption Welfare Services) hosted the monthly First Friday get-together at the city library. With Lucy were Kayla Wieczorek, PAWS volunteer, and Dan Ratliff, organization president.

When the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) said the corner of FM 908 and Roberts Avenue, south of the Old City Cemetery) would be closed for five days starting Monday, they were right on the money.

Judge: Tax hike for 2019

It’s far from unexpected but County Judge Dave Barkemeyer has predicted additional tax hikes are in Milam County’s future. The county lost its largest taxpayer last month when Luminant closed its Sandow 4 and 5 Power Plants near Rockdale.

C’mon, spring

Among those hoping that groundhog predicts winter is over Friday are Josh Barker (L) and Andrew Perez, who took advantage of spring-like weather last week at the city skate park, Mill at Walnut. Just for the record, spring starts March 20.

P-TO dissolved, school ‘disaffiliates’

A volunteer organization which has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of items to Rockdale schools over the past 84 years has dissolved.

‘No’ to Milam, ‘maybe’ to Austin

Amazon isn’t going to build its kazillion-dollar second headquarters near Rockdale. That’s hardly a shock. A proposal last October by a consortium of Milam County groups was always a long shot and was described as a “bold” move by those who prepared it.

Rockdale fans were already aware Tiger State Champion Head Football Coach Jeff Miller is the best high school football coach in Texas. After Thursday night it was official.

First Hacker trial delayed until August

Trials of the four persons accused of capital murder in the death of Emily Hacker, have been delayed until mid-August. Prosecutor Bill Torrey told The Reporter this week, by agreement of all parties involved, the cases have been re-set.
