Cases resume downward trend

The downward trend in new Milam County COVID-19 positive tests resumed over the week as the county gears up for quick-testing clinics, hoped to start as soon as Tuesday.

Welcome students

This is what greeted Rockdale Elementary School students on the Belton Avenue side of the campus when they returned to in-person classes last week. Others are taking “remote learning” classes online. All Milam County students are now back in school using one form or another.

Probe leads to ‘child trafficking’ charges

An outcry by three “minor females” in Lee County last week led the Milam County Sheriff’s Department to arrest two Rockdale teens on felony sex trafficking charges, while another was charged with indecent assault, a misdemeanor.

Ecstasy arrest made by police

A 34-year-old Rockdale woman was charged with possession of the “designer drug” ecstasy after a Friday evening traffic stop. Lt. Stephen Goodrich said a “powdery substance” was recovered from a passenger in the vehicle. “It was tested and the result came back as ecstasy,” Goodrich said.

This slight dip (see white line and partial circle highlight) on US 79 in Thorndale is being looked at in connection with the Aug. 13 tanker truck flip which resulted in the highway being closed for over 14 hours, according to Thorndale Police Chief Mark Birchard.

Autopsy ordered in death by train

An autopsy has been ordered in the death of a 31-year-old Austin man who was struck by a train while walking on the Burlington Northern-Santa Fe tracks near Buckholts Friday morning. David Wilson was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Andy Isaacs, according to Sheriff Chris White.
