Walker Young, (R, shown with his father, Steve), received his Master’s Degree and is only the fourth generation person to become a Mason in the Rockdale Masonic Lodge. His great grandfather, Jewel Dewitt Kornegay, was a member and Master of the lodge in 1957, his grandfather George Young Jr.

Julio’s Mexican Restaurant has been named business of the month by the Rockdale Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Center. The banner was presented recently to restaurant employees and owners Julio Guzman Sr. and Julio Guzman Jr. Chamber officials and ambassadors also participated.

Trustee passes up ballot

Filing season is underway for the May 4 city and school election and, in Rockdale, the first week brought a big announcement. Michelle Lehmkuhl, a four-term, 12-year veteran of the school board, and a former board president, announced she would not seek re-election to her Place 3 position.

It’s obvious scammers didn’t make any New Year’s resolutions to forsake plying their dishonest trades in 2019. During the past week, Milam County residents have reported phony telephone calls claiming to be from both local law enforcement and fire departments.

Going, going gone

The Reporter’s Shannon Whorton took these photos of Sunday night’s total eclipse of the moon, which was said to be one of the most viewed ever in the United States. That’s because of the combination of timing, height in the sky and (at least in Texas) clear to partly cloudy weather conditions.

Ideas sought for new water rate structure

The first of four large water rate hikes for Rockdale customers is on the verge of being finalized and now City Manager Chris Whittaker wants to hear ideas from the public on how it should be fine tuned. A “Water Action Group” meeting is set for 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, at the city library.

—Gonzales Mexican Bar & Grill opened Jan. 14 at 1920 West Cameron (US 79) with a grand opening and ribbon cutting with the Rockdale Chamber of Commerce Board and Chamber Ambassador members. Owners Maricela and Martin Gonzales were there to cut the ribbon along with employees of the business.
